Data Governance

Data mesh and data product

In a nutshell

An approach that spreads data responsibility across business domains, which offer their data to others as "products" with guaranteed quality.

Data mesh proposes that instead of one central team doing everything, each business domain (sales, operations, finance) owns its data and publishes it for others as data products: documented datasets with an owner, a quality contract and a clear way to access them.

It rests on four ideas: domain ownership, data as a product, a shared self-service platform and federated governance with minimal common rules (security, privacy, interoperability) that everyone follows.

It is not for every company: it makes sense in large organisations with many data teams. But the idea of a "data product", with an owner and guaranteed quality, is useful at any scale.
