RACI matrix

In a nutshell

A table that makes clear, for each task, who does it (R), who is accountable (A), who is consulted (C) and who is informed (I).

The RACI matrix is a simple tool to avoid the classic "I thought someone else was doing it". Rows list tasks or decisions, columns list roles, and each cell holds a letter:

  • R – Responsible: who does the task.
  • A – Accountable: who answers for it and has the final say. There should be only one per task.
  • C – Consulted: who gives input before deciding.
  • I – Informed: who needs to know the outcome.

In Data Governance it is used to split tasks between Data Owners, Data Stewards, IT, data protection and the committee. In AI Governance it does the same for AI systems: who approves a new use, who oversees, who reports an incident. It is one of the first things an auditor asks for.
