AI literacy
The skills, knowledge and understanding people need to use AI in an informed way and be aware of its risks. The AI Act requires organisations to promote it.
AI literacy (Article 4) is the set of skills and knowledge that lets people use AI systems with sound judgement, understand their opportunities and be aware of their risks and possible harms.
It is one of the first AI Act obligations, applicable since 2 February 2025, and it applies to all providers and deployers, not just high-risk ones. Following the Digital Omnibus (2026), the text requires taking measures to promote it among staff, without having to guarantee a specific level for each individual.
In practice it means training tailored to each profile (who uses the tool, who oversees it, who decides to buy it) and being able to prove it was done: content, attendees and dates.
