AI regulation in China
China regulates AI through specific rules: public-facing generative AI, algorithm registration and mandatory labelling of AI-generated content since 2025.
China does not yet have a comprehensive AI law, but it has a set of specific rules for anyone offering services in the country: provisions on recommendation algorithms (with an algorithm registry at the cyberspace authority), on deep synthesis (deepfakes) and the 2023 interim measures for public-facing generative AI.
Since 1 September 2025, AI-generated content must be labelled, with visible marks and in metadata. On top of that come the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL), the Data Security Law and the Cybersecurity Law.
The government's 2026 legislative plan mentions speeding up a general AI law. If your company offers AI to users in China, it needs local advice.
