Critical data element (CDE)

In a nutshell

A data element on which important decisions, regulatory reports or key processes depend, and which therefore deserves its own rules and monitoring.

Not all data matters equally. A critical data element (CDE) is one where an error has a high impact: a customer’s tax ID for invoicing, a transaction amount or the variable an AI model uses to decide.

Identifying critical data is the first step of any quality programme: it lets you focus effort on a few fields instead of trying to measure everything.

Each critical data element should have an owner, quality rules and an agreed threshold.
