Data governance committee
The body that takes data governance decisions affecting several areas: priorities, policies, conflicts and follow-up.
The data governance committee brings together the Data Owners of the main domains, the programme lead and, depending on the topic, IT, security and data protection. It is where decisions are taken that no single area can take alone.
Typical duties: approve policies and standards, prioritise which data to improve first, resolve conflicts (two areas with different definitions of "customer"), review quality and maturity indicators, and approve data use for new projects, including AI projects.
It works best with a short charter (who sits on it, how often it meets, how it decides) and a fixed agenda. Many companies extend it to cover AI governance too, or create an AI committee that coordinates with it.
