General-purpose AI model (GPAI)
An AI model trained on large amounts of data that can perform a wide range of different tasks, such as large language models.
A general-purpose AI model (GPAI) is a model that displays significant generality and can competently perform a wide range of distinct tasks, regardless of how it is placed on the market. Large language models (the ones behind conversational assistants) are the typical example.
Its obligations apply from 2 August 2025 and fall on whoever develops the model: technical documentation, information for those who integrate it into their products, a copyright-compliance policy and a public summary of the training data. Models already on the market before that date have until 2 August 2027.
If your company only uses a GPAI model through a tool, you do not carry the model maker's obligations, but you do carry those that apply to the system you build or deploy with it.
