European AI Office

In a nutshell

The European Commission body that supervises general-purpose AI models and coordinates enforcement of the AI Act across the EU.

The European AI Office was set up in 2024 within the European Commission. It is the EU-level centre of expertise and supervision for AI.

Its main tasks: supervise and enforce the obligations of general-purpose AI models (it can request information, evaluate models and propose fines); promote codes of practice; issue guidelines and templates; and coordinate national authorities through the European AI Board. After the Digital Omnibus, it also has exclusive supervision of certain systems built on the same provider's general-purpose models and of systems integrated into very large online platforms and search engines.

For most companies, the authority they will deal with is not the Office but the national authority; in Spain, for example, AESIA.
