Model card

In a nutshell

A short, standardised document describing an AI model: what it is for, what data it was trained on, how it performs and what its limits are.

A model card is like a medicine leaflet, but for an AI model. It is a format proposed by researchers in 2019 that has become common industry practice.

It usually includes: intended use and out-of-scope uses; training and evaluation data; performance metrics, ideally broken down by population group; known limitations and biases; ethical considerations; and who is accountable.

The AI Act does not require this exact format, but much of its content matches what the technical documentation (Annex IV) and the instructions for use of high-risk systems ask for. Keeping one card per model makes it much easier to comply, explain the system to management and pass an audit.
